Chiranjeevi resigns Tirupati Assembly seat

March 29, 2012
Hyderabad

Praja Rajyam Party founder and the newly nominated Rajya Sabha member K Chiranjeevi has resigned to the Tirupati assembly seat Thursday. The resignation will mark the end of a saga for the Tollywood actor who announced his political party amid a huge fanfare at Tirupati. He also contested his first election from Tirupati.

It is to be recalled that Chiranjeevi has merged the Praja Rajyam Party with the Congress party, and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha as a quid pro quo arrangement. With the Tirupati assembly seat falling vacant, the by-election is most likely to be held with the 17 assembly seats which fell vacant after the disqualification of rebel Congress MLAs.

The Congress is likely to nominate former MLA Venkataramana or Galla Jayadev, the son of Minister for Mines and Geology Minister Galla Aruna. The TDP is in a crisis in Tirupati following the mentioning of Chadalawada Krishnamurthy's name by party chief Chandrababu Naidu recently. As far as the YSR Congress Party is concerned, the party is most likely to field B Karunakar Reddy, the former TTD Board Chairman and a close aide of the YSR family.
