PRP likely to go to Supreme court over common election symbol

March 3, 2009

Rattled by the rejection by Election Commission of its application for a common symbol, the Praja Rajyam has desperately begun looking for different options including a tie up with another party that does not have a presence in the State and use its symbol. Before exploring such political options, the Praja Rajyam is preparing to move the Apex Court challenging the Election Commission's six page order declaring that it was not entitled to a uniform symbol.

The Praja Rajyam Party president Chiranjeevi, however, put up a brave face about the setback. Fielding questions in an impromptu meeting with media persons after his return from Mahabubnagar on Tuesday, he said that they are still fighting and will continue to do so till the last minute and in the event of failure, we have alternative plans, he added.

The legal experts of the Praja Rajyam party, the PRP president said that were studying the X Schedule of the Constitution that clearly stipulated how a break up could happen between two parties that contested the elections on a common symbol. Senior party leader P Shivasankar elaborated that if an arrangement materializes with a party outside the State, the latter could write to the Election Commission saying it had no objection to the symbol being given to the Praja Rajyam. Meanwhile, Parakala Prabhakar said that the party is confident that the Supreme Court will direct the EC to use its discretionary powers.
