March 2, 2009
Hyderabad

The Praja Rajyam Party suffered a severe set back with the turning down of common symbol for the party in the coming elections by the Election Commission. The EC has rejected the plea of the PRP president made in person in February first week reconsidered the issue following a direction from the AP High Court to consider the matter afresh and complete the exercise within three weeks.

The full Commission consisting of Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and SY Quaraishi in its six page order cited various Apex Court judgments and provisions of the Election Symbols Order 2005 and said a political party which had not contested a single election was not entitled to a uniform symbol and such symbol was given only to a recognized party.

According to the provision of the Election Symbols Order, the party that is seeking a uniform symbol has to get a minimum percentage of votes in the election and since the Praja Rajyam Party is yet to contest the poll, it could not claim for a uniform symbol said the Election Commission and rejected the claim. In view of the EC order, the Praja Rajyam candidates have to choose symbols among the free symbols given to the independent candidates and there is no guarantee that all over the State the symbol could be obtained. Meanwhile, the president of PR party announced that he will contest from Tirupati who had toured only 19 districts and covered 160 constituencies.
